Akwete Cloth encompasses a diversity of designs, colors and techniques. The town of Akwete in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State in Nigeria is one of the few remaining broad loom weaving centers, which is the exclusive preserve of the Akwete women. The Akwete women, who are taught to weave from an early age by their mothers and grandmothers, set up looms alongside each other in their home compounds and work on their individual projects as a semi-professional activity, in addition to their domestic duties and child rearing.

There are three basic styles of the Akwete Cloth: the plain weave, the complex reversible, and the most popular non-reversible patterns. The cloth is woven in either cotton, silk or a mixture of both. The designs are complied from a vocabulary of basic geometric shapes, with stripes and zig-zag diagonals used to build representational symbols, as well as purely abstract motifs. Innovation and improvisation on traditional designs give each weaver a distinctive identity, with certain designs acknowledged as one person’s copyright. All the patterns, however, have their own names and meanings.
The most distinctive symbol in Akwete Cloth is that of Ikaki, the tortoise, represented by a body in the shape of diamond with extended fork-like legs. Ikaki is also a traditional symbol of royalty. Ikaki is always woven in these variation of colors – white, black and red.
